island of sark
crafting a modular home, designed + constructed for a simple island life
+ project type: replacement house
+ RIBA work stages: 0-4
+ location: island of sark, channel islands
This project has been full of architectural challenges for us! The design had to be:
+ built within a budget of £250k
+ constrained in size to the footprint of an existing concrete slab
+ built within the ridge height of an existing building
+ the entire building had to be carried to site in stick form!
Part of the beauty of the Island is that there are no cars, just tractors and narrow tracks! So, every component of the build has to be thought about and sized so that it will fit on the back of a tractor, then carried into place by hand.
We have designed the building to be of modular construction, using a light gauge steel frame, with only minimal sections of hot-rolled steelwork. The glazing has been kept to modest panel sizes and rooflights are sized to be lifted into place easily.
We didn’t want to miss an opportunity to capture the panoramic coastal views, so we positioned windows carefully to frame pictures of the changing landscape.
A truly unique coastal site and design brief, we look forward to sharing more updates as the build progresses.
